They are out there, and all their issues have been more or less sorted out with the available aftermarket.

I know that there were aluminum head/cast iron block corrosion issues but those are solvable with a thicker head gasket.

Also premature timing chain and crankshaft wear. The crankshaft just had something to do with shoddy materials in manufacturing if I recall, so easily fixed with a new one.

They can be kept going. I often see one and it’s about the only classic car I see frequently.

My childhood neighbor had one in BRG. I think he still does. He restored it with his daughter and she drove to senior prom in it. Did something similar with a TR5 or TR6 for the younger son.

Beautiful cars :) I really want one too.
Can’t say as to their availability in the States but pretty much all of the reliability issues have been worked out over the years.
They had issues with cooling as the water pump is mounted quite high so a little drop in coolant level below minimum can cause them to stop pumping properly. Easily fixable by fitting a modern expansion tank on the bulkhead to raise the level of the coolant higher (there’s even a youtube video of a chap who’s done it if memory serves). There’s also people who claim that the majority of the cooling issues were related to poor build quality (there’s a story about a chap rebuilding a Stag engine who poured a cupful of casting sand out of the coolant channels), but a bit of extra resilience when it comes to cooling is no bad thing.
The other issue that isn’t really resolvable is the slanted head studs (actually Saab’s idea) that causes the head to ‘walk’ slightly during expansion and cooling, causing premature headgasket failure. If you build it well in the first place though and take care not to overheat the engine then it should last an acceptably long time.
The other thing to address is the rather lacklustre 145bhp from the 3.0l (although it compared well to other engines at the time). The stock inlet manifold is rather restrictive (topping out at ~165bhp). Swap that out for a proper inlet manifold, fuel injection and a set of cams and there's a chap on my Triumhp forum who's making 246bhp which is none too shabby :)

That's actually a fair chunk of their total production figures (25938). There's a lot still surviving in the UK because they pretty much instantly became cult cars so there was a very low attrition rate. Not sure about the US though...
